MapTools for your use case

Offline maps and field documentation for forestry and hunting

Use your own maps and territory areas offline, document observations and inspection routes, and support shot-location marking and follow-up searches with traceable map objects.

Typical workflow

Approximate a suspected shot location from the raised blind

The raised blind provides a fixed observation point. Save it as a marker, create a bearing in the observed direction and a distance circle from the estimated or measured range. Their intersection can be stored as a suspected shot location, but remains an approximation based on observation, distance and device sensors.

Tools in the field

Forestry, hunting and territory tasks MapTools can support

MapTools combines your own maps and geodata with points, areas, bearings and tracks. It documents spatial work but replaces neither professional procedures nor official data.

Typical workflow

Mark a suspected shot location and document a follow-up search

This workflow supports spatial documentation after an observed shot. The intersection is only an estimate calculated from inputs. Waiting times, on-site marking, territory boundaries and the decision about a professional follow-up remain governed by hunting practice and applicable rules.

  1. 1
    Save the observation position

Store the actual high-seat or ground position as a marker and add a short note about the observed situation.

    Markers, photos and notes
  2. 2
    Create direction and distance

From that point, create a bearing in the observed direction and a circle using the estimated or measured distance.

    Bearing and radius
  3. 3
    Check the intersection

Intersect bearing and circle, compare the result with visible terrain references and save the plausible candidate as “Suspected shot location”.

    Calculate intersections
  4. 4
    Approach and start tracking deliberately

Use the marker only for orientation. When the professional search starts, explicitly start track recording, pause interruptions and stop it when finished.

Tools in the field

The track documents the route, not the professional decision

A recorded route can make the start, search path, pauses and available GPS quality data traceable. It does not interpret field signs or an animal's condition and cannot decide waiting time, search strategy or the use of a qualified tracking team. While MapTools is visible, an object alarm can report entering or leaving a territory boundary stored as an area; optional background monitoring supports explicitly enabled markers and circles only.

  • Start the track only when the actual search starts and control pauses and completion deliberately
  • Save important locations as separate markers or notes instead of inferring them only from the track line
  • Afterwards review route, time, distance and GPS quality and share only the required format
  • Enable the territory-area alarm deliberately and observe the foreground and background monitoring limits

More field tasks

Document boundaries, facilities, fields and sightings

These workflows combine map objects, local estimates and deliberate data transfer. External parcel or specialist datasets are not included with MapTools.

Two forestry professionals transfer territory data by QR between phones in a forest

Share territory boundaries and hunting facilities

Record boundaries as lines or areas and facilities as markers. Transfer compact map objects offline by QR, or export larger projects and deliberately share the file through Android, for example with a messenger app.

Map fields and estimate fencing

Draw a field or pasture area and enter post spacing and wire count to estimate fence length, post count and total wire length. Terrain, gates, corners and reserve still require professional allowance.

Relate woodland to parcel information

Mark your woodland and, where a lawful service is available, add WFS or OGC Features as a read-only object layer. Provider, network, access, fees, licence and accuracy remain your responsibility; a map line is not an official boundary survey.

Mark and share sightings

Store a sighting as a marker with time, coordinate, note and optional photo or audio note. Deliberately share only the required information by QR or export; MapTools does not upload it automatically to a MapTools cloud.

Go deeper

A line on the map is not a boundary survey

Imported territory, parcel, ownership or stand boundaries may be outdated, generalised or referenced incorrectly. MapTools verifies neither ownership nor access or hunting rights. Smartphone GPS and a displayed line do not replace an official record, survey or coordination with rights holders.

Interpret geodata correctly

Important in the field

Understand the practical limits

MapTools includes no official cadastral, ownership, hunting, weather or wind data. Check rights, currency and accuracy of your own and external data; smartphone GPS is not a cadastral boundary survey.

FAQ

Common questions about forestry, hunting and territory work

Can I import my own territory, stand or property boundaries?

Yes, depending on content and CRS, through formats including GeoJSON, ArcGIS/Esri JSON, KML/KMZ, Shapefile ZIP and GeoPackage. Check source, licence, date, reference system and display accuracy. An imported line is not an official boundary survey.

Can I document trees, damage or structures?

A point can be placed from GPS, coordinates, the map or crosshair and linked to a photo, note or audio note. MapTools is not a specialist forest inventory system and does not automatically calculate species logic, volume, site quality or growth.

How can I mark a suspected shot location from a high seat?

Save the observation point, create a bearing in the observed direction and a circle with the estimated or measured distance. Their intersection can be saved as a marker but remains an estimate based on observation, sensors and distance input.

Can MapTools record a follow-up search and warn at a territory boundary?

Yes. Track recording can be explicitly started, paused, resumed and stopped. For a territory boundary stored as an area, a deliberately enabled object alarm can report entering or leaving while MapTools is visible. Optional background monitoring supports explicitly enabled markers and circles only. Neither feature replaces a professional search or legal coordination across territory boundaries.

Do maps, points and tracks work without mobile service?

GPS, local project objects and prepared offline maps work without a data connection. Online maps, WMS, WFS or OGC services still require network access and possibly credentials, so prepare required data beforehand.

Are cadastral, ownership, hunting, weather or wind data included?

No. Such specialist data is not automatically part of MapTools. External services may require payment, registration or licensing and must be configured lawfully and assessed professionally by the user.
