Activate elevation data
Use HGT, DEM GeoTIFF, ASC or DTED data that covers the observation point and radius. A normal base map is not enough, and GeoPackage DEM is not supported as a terrain source.
Manual
ViewRange calculates which terrain within a selected radius may be visible from an observation point. It evaluates a full circle, not one chosen direction.
Workflow
An active, supported elevation source is required in the current map context.
Use HGT, DEM GeoTIFF, ASC or DTED data that covers the observation point and radius. A normal base map is not enough, and GeoPackage DEM is not supported as a terrain source.
Open Tools → ViewRange and select a radius from 1 to 10 km, Fast, Standard or High quality and a display colour.
Tap the map or use the current GPS position. The calculation samples terrain rays in every direction.
MapTools prepares elevation cells and sight rays. When cancelling, an available partial result can be retained or the temporary ViewRange deleted.
Check origin elevation, visible sectors and elevation coverage. Partial elevation coverage means that the result is incomplete.
Save the result as an editable project object, adjust the observer height from the 1.7 m default when needed, recalculate it or export a PNG.
Accuracy and limits
Vegetation, buildings, weather, observer height and the resolution or age of elevation data can change what is actually visible.
ViewRange is an orientation aid, not an official or safety-critical line-of-sight certificate. Higher quality and larger radii also require more time, memory and battery.
